Vampires were first created by Sanguis, the God of Bloodshed and Murder. They are created due to an imbalance in the soul, causing a minor crack that is filled in with a unique form of Blood Magic. This strange affliction is able to be spread among any being that possesses a soul, enabling the creation of the 'Key' that causes Vampirism.
Vampires come in many varieties, too many to count, however they can always be split into categories based on how powerful their Affinity to Blood is, as this shows the portion of the soul that has been turned into the 'Key'. Every Vampire fights against something known as the Beast, the Beast is the manifestation of the 'Key' trying to take over the rest of the soul and thus command the person itself, it is a raw being of spiritual blood magic, almost akin to a Ghost with sway only over a specific person.
This manifestation however does allow some Vampires to tap into it and access something known as the Ars Vampyra. Ars Vampyra are a unique magical discipline that only some Vampires can access, not all Vampires can use it however every Ars Vampyra user is a Vampire. Ars Vampyra are used to tap into the soul and outside manifestation itself to generate special effects, this can include reducing the effects of Vampiric weaknesses, using the Beast to attack by bringing it into being for a short period of time, minor mind control through locked eyes and also the spreading of the Vampiric Curse through bite or Runic Magic.
Every Vampire experiences a set of weaknesses, although some categories of Vampire experience certain weaknesses much harsher than usual. The primary weaknesses are Fire, Sunlight and Divine Will. Those closer to Human than Beast are resistant to Sunlight but usually weaker to Fire, with those closer to Beast having the opposite. Divine Will is only expressed by Gods or Avatars but few know how to use it properly, making it the least known weakness, however it is also how Sanguis keeps control of all Vampires. Certain types of Vampire can have different weaknesses or can even be completely resistant to others.
Affinity 1 Categories:
Vyper: The Vyper is what occurs when a newly created or weak Vampire lets the Beast start to claw at their mind. Vypers are very harsh and are quick to anger as well as preferring aggressive Blood Arts. They are known to be strangely resistant to pain and are unlikely to stop themselves from fully draining someone that they bite.
Dhampir: The Dhampir is the middle ground of the weakest Vampires, some even consider them not to be Vampires at all but their ability to use low level Ars Vampyra proves their credentials. Dhampir are able to hide their Vampirism for short periods of time from all but the most prying eyes, causing them to appear to be normal people, other than their enlarged fangs.
Hyden: Hyden are the weakest Vampires capable of controlling their Beast, although only to a limited degree. Due to this they are resistant to sunlight and are able to retract or elongate their fangs but they are unable to hide the crack in their soul as well as Dhampir due to the constant combat with the Beast to keep their human nature as much as possible.
Ravenen: Rarely spoken about due to embarrassment, Ravenen are what happens when a Beast completely consumes a newly created Vampire. Their jaws split open, their teeth turn to dagger-length spikes and their fingers burst open in fountains of blood as their bones push out to become claws. Ravenen are entirely lost to the Beast and are known to attack and kill anything that possesses blood, including other Vampires, in order to try and sate their eternal bloodlust. They experience heightened weaknesses however they are immune to pain and mind altering effects due to their ravenous insanity.
Affinity 2 Categories:
Nosferatu: One of the most commonly seen types of Vampire due to how easy it is to fall to the Beast, the Nosferatu are what are considered 'stereotypical'. They possess slightly elongated ears and their fangs are especially long, their faces are usually gaunt and they have blood red eyes. However they are known for being able to enhance the bloodlust of others around them, making it difficult for people to think or use defensive abilities properly. They are also somewhat resistant to fire but possess an acute weakness to Sunlight.
Vampyr: Usually looked over and forgotten about, the Vampyr is the true stereotypical Vampire as they are the most common. Usually just appearing as pale, long-fanged versions of their usual species, the Vampyr seems to possess no special qualities. Known to only the most ancient of beings, Vampyr are actually very good at appearing average and blending into the background, making them some of the best at hiding from hunters.
Kyn: The Kyn are also known as the Shadows, they seem to possess the weakest Ars Vampyra but also have almost none of the weaknesses of a normal Vampire. Instead they are terrified of their own reflection, it shows them only the Beast if they look at it. They are nearly impossible to detect unless one has powerful scrying spells to locate the Kyn but are probably the closest of all Vampires to being without the beast.
Affinity 4 Categories:
Fellryn: Almost like 'Demons', these Vampires have had some attributes of their beast expressed onto their physical forms. Fellryn usually have a maw of sharp teeth and strange eyes, the most common being entirely black pits, and usually have an altered limb or two that exposes their Beast-like nature to anyone that knows what a Fellryn is. Fellryn are resistant to Fire and gain power the more blood is spilled around them but they grow weaker around Light Magic as well as Sunlight.
Echofang: The Echofang is a Vampire that has let the Beast partially subsume them but have had the power of will to keep it as a separate entity still. This leads to a strange creature that is no longer at war but is technically no longer two separate entities either. Echofangs are prone to mood swings and their voice constantly sounds like it is doubled or echoing off nothing, however they are able to much more instinctively tap into the Beast, enabling them to massively enhance their own body with its power, however they are entirely unable to manifest it and they are terrified of Fire, usually fleeing from it.
Affinity 6 Categories:
Simulgheist: The Simulgheist is one of the rarest and least known types of Vampire. These seem to be created during a failed spiritual cleansing of a Vampire, something that usually kills them. However occasionally the Beast and the Vampire become tethered together in a more unstable, perfect manner. This creates a Simulgheist, a Vampire that is able to swap planes with their Beast, causing the Beast to become physical. This usually terrifies opponents due to how deranged and unnatural the Beast looks. The Vampire is usually very powerful with any magics that aren't Blood magic due to their unique spiritual connection and exhibit few of the weaknesses of Vampires, however they break any mirror they look upon and running water becomes like acid to them. The Beast on the other hand is exceptionally powerful with Blood Magic but cannot differentiate friend from foe and all Vampiric weaknesses are enhanced upon it.
Consumed: Consumed are a variant of Vampire that is caused by the 'Key' being transmuted temporarily into Shadow Magic rather than Blood Magic. Once this fades, a lingering resonance of Magic creates the Consumed. Consumed seem to be slowly coming apart, their body fading into wisps of shadow, they also appear to bleed this when wounded. Their Ars Vampyra change to instead manipulate their shadow and those of enemies, however this makes them especially weak to Light Magic and Sunlight, however they also appear to disappear into shadows when standing within them.
Vylark: This type of Vampire is one that has started to learn to manipulate and control the Beast while keeping it as a separate entity, rather than instinctive control or by merit of the power of their soul, they train to control the Beast. This allows them to manifest aspects of it onto themselves at will, usually resulting in Wolf or Bat-like traits as well as massive enhancements to physical abilities and mental defenses, other animals are seen however they are just rarer. Vylarks usually appear very close to human until they start to tap into their Beast and are difficult to spot without powerful magic.
Affinity 8 Categories:
Hylgheist: A Vampire that chose to give in to the Beast and let it control them becomes a Hylgheist. The Beast rewards them with a modicum of control but mostly they are simply bloodstarved and crazed monsters. Hylgheists almost always appear like massive bat or wolf monsters, sometimes over ten feet tall, their bodies warped and mangled by the Beast's influence. They are almost entirely immune to Fire and normal weaponry but their weakness to Sunlight is intense and their broken, failing mind makes them weak to illusory magic or mind altering effects. Hylgheists are capable of control and can talk and interact but it is usually difficult for them.
The Molded: This type of Vampire is incredibly rare to occur as it involves the Vampire being successfully cleansed of the curse before choosing to crack their own soul and let the beast back in. This willful acceptance of their Vampiric nature creates a Molded. These Vampires are usually incredibly disturbing to look upon as their body constantly seems to warp or drip or shift, changing every time one looks away and looks back. They are the most obvious to any form of magical sensory but are also the greatest at hiding among crowds as their abilities let them shapeshift into humanoid figures, including taking their speech patterns and their Ars Vampyra can let them devour memories as they eat people. There have been several cases of Molded taking over lives for years before a magical Hunter locates and drives them away.
Vessels: A Vessel is what happens when the Beast is slain but the Vampire's body is left over. Most of the time the body simply collapses to the ground and dies eventually, the Beast being the one to sustain it. However sometimes the body refuses to die and instead rises up again. Vessels are instead powered by broken fragments of their own soul, becoming a strange form of collective entity. Vessels are known for being able to string multiple types of magic together at once, however their overall power is weaker and they possess none of the usual vampiric weaknesses. Not only that but they are heavily resistant to spells or abilities that affect souls. Counter to this, they are intensely weak to Life magic, any form of healing is absolute anathema to them, destroying their bodies and souls rapidly and any creature or person with Life Magic is able to instinctively sense when a Vessel is nearby, even when they are hiding their eyeless sockets and constantly open, empty maws.
Affinity 10 Categories:
Bloodfangs: This type of Vampire is one that has fully subsumed their own Beast, taking it in as part of themselves and letting them become the Beast itself. Bloodfangs are incredibly dangerous due to having the powers and bloodlust of the Beast but still being in almost full control of their own faculties. Fire is their greatest weakness but they are resistant to Sunlight and are one of the only Vampires to be resistant to Divine Will, this results in regular purges of Bloodfangs, leading them to be the rarest type of Vampire. Bloodfangs usually possess animalistic traits that are incredibly obvious, some of them even appearing like less warped versions of Hylgheists with their mental capabilities still intact.
Drachii Lords: When the Beast and Soul are in perfect balance, a Drachii Lord is created. They become a Council of power with both sides having equal say although they are constantly at war to try and gain the upper hand. Times of intense stress can sometimes lead to a Drachii Lord becoming a Bloodfang or Whisperfang and once done, the change cannot be reverted. Drachii Lords seem to have normal Vampiric weaknesses and have the unique, terrifying ability of chaining their Ars Vampyra into their normal magic. They are the most graceful of Vampires but most definitely look Vampiric in nature.
Whisperfangs: The opposite to the Bloodfang, a Whisperfang has trapped their Beast and shackled it down, no longer does it fight for their attention and no longer do they need to fight it, they have chained it and made it their slave. Whisperfangs, due to this, are weaker in combative Ars Vampyra however their persuasive and seductive abilities are massively enhanced and only the most powerful of Magical sensors are able to detect that they are in fact Vampires and not just powerful Blood Mages. They are also nearly immune to Sunlight, able to walk in it for extended periods of time without harm and lastly, they appear entirely normal, their fangs and claws are fully retractable.
