Throughout the Sanctuary, there were a multitude of sounds, each one different and unique. Someone laughing with another. The pitter patter of the cold autumn rain hitting the ground. Conversations ranging far and wide. The occasional bird chirping, even. The Sanctuary was alive and breathing, functioning as a well oiled machine. In one of the multitude of houses in the Sanctuary, there were a different set of noises. The sound of hands tapping away at a keyboard. The quick clicking and tapping of a mouse. With the rest of the house being completely silent, these sounds led to a room near the back, the illumination of a screen visible. In the room sat a teenager. Large headphones over his ears, a mic hanging close to his lips. His hair was relatively long, with a mix of orange/blond color that was the defining feature of him. His skin was pale, and he was overall not that big, not even hitting six feet tall. His gold eyes scanning over the screen at rapid speed, behind professional gray-rimmed glasses.
The game looked pretty simple. It was a top down game, with a multitude of bullets and blood spraying across the screen. Despite this, the avatar that the teen was controlling was weaving through it, seemingly untouched. He dispatched each foe with ruthless efficiency, another character keeping close to him but seemingly unable to get any kills. The screen flashed, the words "VICTORY" spread out over the front. In his headset, he could hear laughing. It was of another teen, low but still containing the crispness of adolescence. "Damn, Alex, do you even need me on this team? Holy shit." The screen shifted, showing a scoreboard. At the top was the username 'MercerWithaMouth'. His score was almost triple that of the second place title, 'FrontierJasper'. On the category 'deaths', 'MercerWithaMouth' was at a dead 0. The teenager leaned back, a smile on his face. He spoke in a light tone, his voice quiet but firm. "Nope." He'd give a small laugh, letting the screen transfer back to the main menu. The other person was laughing, his headset filled with the other one's chuckles, before he spoke once again, "Okay, come on, let's get another game going, Alex" He gave another chuckle, "I mean, since we're practically unstoppable when we have you on our team." Alex tapped on his desk, looking around, "I'm going to go buy some snacks first. I'll be back." He seemed to wait for a reaction from the other, which would be a groan, with him responding almost immediately, "Aw, come on man. It's like midnight, is there even a store open?" Alex wouldn't respond, getting up and leaning in, making sure the headset didn't tug with his movement. "Enjoy the losing streak while I'm gone, Jasp." The other would groan, saying something else, but Alex didn't hear it, taking off his headset and leaving it there, giving a stretch and a sigh. He'd look around his dark room, the monitor seeming to be the only source of light. With it, though, you could get a good view of his room. It was small, with a small desk in which sat the monitor and a large desktop computer, and a twin-size bed directly next to it. There was a dresser and a closet. On the ground, there was the occasional piece of dirty clothing. On his bed was a teal-like colored hoodie, which he took and put on. On his way out, he'd pick up the dirty clothes, dropping them into a hamper next to his door. He'd walk right through the dark house, not hitting a single thing and moving through it with almost a memorized pattern, seeming to not hit a single thing on his way. He opened the door, putting his hood on and heading out, the cold rain continuing as he exited.

A middle-aged man, who looked just as old if not older, was walking down a street of the city. He had glasses, grey, shaggy hair, and a generally sad face. As much as he looked miserable on the outside, he felt worse on the inside.
Harvak was walking on the way to a nearby convenience store to get a good brand of cigarettes. Good cigarettes were getting hard to find. No one seemed to know how to make a damn good cigarette these days. Despite it being midnight, he was wide wake due to his nocturnal sleep schedule. He didn't mind the night life. In fact, he prefers the time when there were less people around.
He walked with a walking stick with his right hand, and kept his left hand in his jumper's pouch. The jumper's hood protected him from most of the rain. He liked the rain. The sound of it was therapeutic to him, making him calm and go into a daydream. He was in a middle a pleasant daydream when suddenly he felt nervous for no apparent reason. His uneasiness broke him out of his daydream just as he walked into someone. "Ooof!" he exclaimed, partly from the impact and partly out of surprise. He saw that he collided with some kid. He didn't know what he was doing this time of the night. Probably up to no good! "Watch where you're going!" he said out loud, clearly annoyed. Something was weird about this kid, but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. But no matter, he was prepared to get away from him and move on with his life.

Alex was minding his own business, hands deep in his jacket pocket as he moved through the empty streets. He was thinking of what snacks he should get. Maybe he could use a different strategy when he comes back. He gave a small scoff to himself, Maybe Jasp actually won a match while I was gone... he'd continue walking, thinking of plans and what to do next. This was paused, however, when someone bumped into him. Alex found this strange. First off, it's quite late at night, there aren't many people out. How hard is it to not bump into someone? Secondly, the dude had bags under his eyes, as if the very thought of sleep was just a conspiracy made to rob someone of their night time festivities. He'd pause, looking at the person as he spoke, giving a small squint before scoffing, putting his hands back into his pocket and giving a small scoff. "Whatever." Well. He'd continue walking on his way to the store, giving the person another once-over. The guy looked uneasy. And, if Alex can bet any money, it was probably him causing it. He can't explain it, but throughout his life he's always made people uneasy. Project partners at school, irl friends, even teachers at times. He's only minding his own business, leave him be.

Harvak gave "Humph!" as he saw the kid walk away in the direction that he was going. He started to walk behind him in the same direction. It would have seemed like he was following the kid, but it wasn't deliberate.
Normally, the grumpy man would stay silent. But... something steered him to speak. He was almost scared of the child. He doesn't know why. It's almost as if he needed to ask him something...
"Hey, kid," he finally said. It was good for him to say something, too. It would have been hella awkward if he stayed silent and just walk the same direction as the kid. He wanted to be left alone, but being accused of stalking wouldn't help. But that wasn't what was making him nervous.
"What are you even doing this time of night? Aren't you supposed to be sleeping?"

Alex would give a small glance behind him, noting the other fellow following him. He would give a squint, turning back around and pulling out his phone, looking at the time. The person was following him. Given the fact that the person was acting all nervous, he could give a guess that the guy was probably just heading to the same place as Alex. This was further proven when the dude started speaking. He wouldn't look back, continuing to look at his phone as he spoke. "It's only midnight. What's it to you?" His voice was extremely flat, lacking most emotion to it. His voice would be borderline monotonous if not for his adolescent voice. He wanted to finish this up. Go to the store, get his snacks, get back. Cause Jasp is going to get him lobbied with knowledge-less players who could be beaten by a child with a button mashing fantasy.

Harvak almost stopped walking out of shock. "O-only?!"
A lot of teenagers and young adults stay up late at night, even past midnight, but Harvak either forgot or simply did not know this, for he was an isolated individual. He only went into the city to get food and other essentials to live at his secluded house out in the wilderness. How did he get all the way to the city? He was a really good walker. He didn't mind the walk, and he didn't want to deal with getting a vehicle. It would have reminded him too much about technology, anyway...
"It is past midnight! What do you do up so late?" He half-expected the teenager to come up with some lame excuse, while suspecting something more malicious or trouble-making. The kid seemed pretty calm about it, even if he came off as cold with his monotonous answer.

Alex would give a raised eyebrow, pausing momentarily in his walk but not losing sight of his phone. He would then suck on his teeth, continuing to walk. The man was... strange. Well, not strange. More like he's acting strange. While he could ignore the dude Alex can reckon he's also heading to the store, meaning he's stuck with the guy.
Goddammit.
He'd answer the man's question with another question, his tone flat but still getting the message across, "Do you happen to have signed my birth certificate? Cause you don't look like my father. Maybe next time don't ask me questions like you're some concerned parent of mine when you know exactly where I'm heading." He wouldn't even put the effort to answer the man's question. It's late. They're both heading to the store. He wants to get back to his game. How could it be this difficult to deduce?

Harvak let out a "Hrmph" without saying another word. As awkward as it was, he walked with Alex in silence. He didn't even look at Alex anymore. Kids these days. No, not just kids -- everyone these days are nothing but trouble. The best thing they have done was leave him alone.
When they went to the store, Harvak quickly went straight to the shopkeeper. He eyed the shelf of cigarettes placed behind the shopkeeper. He pointed at the one he wanted, and pulled out his wallet as the shopkeeper went to get three packs of them. Cigarettes provided good stress relief without messing with one's mind unlike alcohol or many other drugs.

Alex would simply turn back around, continuing his walk along to the store. When he finally got there, he got to work grabbing a 'snack'. Though, when he finally made it to the register, it looked more like a feast. Bags upon bags of chips, drinks galore; he barely held it all together as he made it to the register, waiting behind the other as he purchased his cigarettes.
On the one hand, Alex finds it absolutely revolting and disgusting, and he doesn't understand who the hell actually enjoys smoking. On the other hand, he also notices it's an addiction that he has to physically deal with. So he wouldn't say anything, instead patiently tapping his foot, waiting for the other to finish so he can get all of this stuff in a bag.

Harvak paid the shopkeeper the exact change. He knew exactly what the prices for the cigarettes were -- here came here often enough to know by heart. He put the packs in his pockets and left the store. As soon as he walked out, he stepped to the side of the store entrance. He took out a cigarette, lit it, and took a smoke. What was with that kid? Oh well, it didn't matter anymore. He walked away, back in the direction from where he came, back home.
