Species Name: Astralkin
Astralkin are deeply tied to this Domain as well as the Domains of Sun and Moon as pieces of each domain were taken and carefully crafted and empowered in order to create the first Astralkin who have since went on to procreate.
Despite their differences, there are a few overarching elements that are similar amongst Astralkin. First of all, Astralkin do not possess a heart, instead they have what is known as a Lifestone or Heartstone in the middle of their chest, hidden by their ribs which are denser and heavier than those of a human to protect the stone. This stone is a natural occurence and innately siphons away natural magic around them to power their body. Astralkin take in far more energy when under their corresponding astral body but they are able to eat and drink as normal, they just take far less nutrition and sustenance from it.
Secondly, each Astralkin embodies what is known amongst them as an 'Aspect'. The Aspect is invariably animal in nature, although in some cases it can be mythical creatures. The 'Aspect' is actually a thing that is chosen by the Astralkin upon their second Heightening. When an 'Aspect' is chosen, the Astralkin begins to manifest and show features of that animal, usually to an exaggerated degree. For example a Solkin that embodies the Aspect of the Swan would have large swooping black marks around the eyes, their limbs becoming longer and more graceful and upon the Third Heightening even manifesting a large pair of graceful wings.
There are three types of Astralkin and in appearance, each of them are strikingly different.
First are the Solkin, those born under the Sun. These beings as with other Astralkin go by other names as well, such as Celestians or Radiants. Solkin are the tallest, standing somewhere between six and a half to eight feet tall. They possess gleaming golden or bronze skin with glowing eyes usually in vibrant primary colours. Their hair usually resembles metals of some description, primarily Gold but others have been noted and their hair splits into motes of light at the end.
Solkin are known for giving out a pleasant warmth and appear to only possess eyebrows, eyelashes and hair on their head with no body hair elsewhere. They are usually Pyromancers or Luxamancers in addition to their Astromancy.
The three most common Aspects for Solkin are Stag, Swan and Lion. Generally animals seen as brave, heroic or proud give their Aspects to Solkin and more than one Phoenix Aspect has been noted.
Second are the Lunakin, those born under the Moon. Rarer than Solkin, they are also known as Crescentlings or Tidedancers. Lunakin are the second tallest, standing between six and seven feet tall. While Radiants possess metallic skin in warmer colours, the skin of a Crescentling is colder in colour, usually Silver or Iron, other darker metals have been noted. Their eyes are usually dark colours, especially those of the night sky or shadows and they deeply reflect light when it is shone upon them. Their hair is the most normal, appearing organic but is usually in darker colours. When moving, it is known that Lunakin leave small trails of light and give off sparkles or motes when doing large drastic movements.
Lunakin are known for being cool to the touch, although not cold, and possess strangely symmetrical hair. They usually have long swooping eyebrows and eyelashes and a strip of soft, downy hair that runs down the middle of the chest as well as two to six rings on the outsides of their legs. Most Lunakin are Hydromancers or Shadow Mages in addition to their Astromancy.
In regards to Aspects, the three most common of the Lunakin are Wolf, Fox and Spider. Creatures of great knowledge, stealth or hunting are the ones most likely to grant their Aspect to the Lunakin and Dragon Aspects have been noted before.
Lastly are the Stellakin, the rarest and shortest of the Astralkin. These Astralkin also go by Starchildren or Nightbringers. Standing between four and a half and five and a half feet tall, they are undoubtedly the shortest of the Astralkin however this does nothing to make them less tenacious. They possess skin of either alabaster white or oil black that seems to sparkle or split into various colours when bright light is shone on it and they usually possess freckles in the opposite colour to their skin in the shape of star maps and constellations over their body. Their eyes are larger than those of a human and their hair takes on an almost crystalline or gem-like quality despite moving like normal hair. They possess reflective eyes in bright, vibrant colours and their hair is usually the same. Their fingers, hands, toes and feet also create small constellation or starmap like shapes when they move, the lights lasting for only a second or two before fading away.
Stellakin give off a strange sensation of energy, touching them almost akin to static electricity although far more bearable and pleasant. They possess body hair more similar to that of a human, although it is very soft and usually possesses the crystalline quality the rest of their hair possesses. Most Stellakin are War Mages or Blood Mages in addition to their normal Astromancy.
For Aspects, the three most common to Stellakin are the Snake, the Owl and the Raven. Generally predators, creatures capable of destruction or that are known to be tricksters or mischievous are the ones most likely to give their Aspect to a Stellakin and indeed there has been Thunderbird Aspects noted amongst Stellakin.
To begin with, Astralkin age as any other, they are born like a mammal although they age very quickly and are usually walking and talking after a single year. They then age as normal until about the age of 10 Years Old. At this point they stop aging until they learn enough and gain access to their magic.
This usually happens within two to three years. Once done, the Astralkin goes through a small vision quest that they do not speak of and they undergo what is known as the First Heightening. Once this is achieved, the Astralkin rapidly ages over the course of a week until they resemble a human of around 16-18 years. Those of the First Heightening are still considered children by the Astralkin and are taught to hone their magic and learn more about themselves and what they wish their role to be.
Eventually, usually five to ten years later, they undergo the Second Heightening. The Second Heightening allows them to choose their Aspect as the Spirits of several beasts that have watched them grow come forth and offer their Aspects. An Aspect must be chosen or else the Second Heightening is not achieved. Once done the Astralkin undergoes another series of rapid aging and resembles a human of around 25.
At this point, the Astralkin is considered an adult and most Astralkin do not progress past this point. They do not age normally and stay in their prime until they follow the Call.
With enough magical power and learning, as well as confidence and surety in their role, an Astralkin can gain even more power and undergo the Third Heightening. The Third Heightening generally does not involve aging anymore, however it has been known to age some Astralkin to around 30-40 equivalent. The main effect of the Third Heightening is an increase in magical power and far more obvious manifestation of their Aspect, even going as far as growing additional limbs such as tails, stingers or wings. Those of the Third Heightening feel the Call more keenly than those of lower Heightenings and are treated as elders and far more knowledgeable and powerful.
It is very little known but it is possible to gain the Fourth Heightening although the process for achieving such a thing is not known. Achieving this turns the Astralkin more into an animal hybrid of their Aspect however they gain the ability to demanifest parts of their Aspect and remanifest them at will as well as gaining even more magical power.
There is also whispering of a Fifth Heightening but it has never been achieved.
Generally, the greater an Astralkin's Heightening, the more profound and confident they are in their personality and while the personalities of the Astralkin can be as varied as that of any human, there are specific archetypes associated with each type.
Solkin are known for being social, extroverted and friendly, even if they are slightly aloof. As they gain Heightenings, this usually becomes more obvious with them almost becoming arrogant or cocky.
Lunakin on the other hand are known for being introverted and enjoying time alone, usually with books or other sources of information. As they age, they can become reclusive or even manic in their pursuit of knowledge.
Stellakin are mischievous and playful, generally getting on quite well with the Fae. Stellakin are the least likely to go up Heightenings however when they do, they can turn dangerous or even malicious in their tricks.
The last thing to know about Astralkin is the presence of the Call.
An Astralkin cannot die of old age and generally diseases are not quite as prevalent in them. Damage or poison can kill them as can a lack of sustenance. However the major cause of death amongst Astralkin is the Call.
Due to their connection to the Stars and, deeper than that, the Spirit Realm, Astralkin constantly hear the whispers of their ancestors and feel their desire to be together once again. The more powerful an Astralkin becomes, the louder these whispers become. At any point, an Astralkin can release the energy within their Lifestone and allow themselves to pass on, returning to their ancestors and loved ones. This is known as Answering the Call and is never seen as a negative thing amongst Astralkin.
Appearance: Though the term Astralkin is used, the three species under its umbrella are different enough that only their connection to the Domain of Space keeps them linked.
