He has been, up to this day, a loner, the reasons for which has accumulated throughout his life. He wasn't even friends with his own sister. Besides the typical sibling annoyance, Harvak was jealous of his sister's gifted ability with magic she learned in school, as he struggled with magic. In fact, not once was he able to to make magic work.
During his lonely and magic-free hours, he worked on mechanical toys for fun, to pass time, and, more importantly, to learn how they work. He loved them, and always had a knack for them. One day, he noticed something peculiar about one of his toys. He previously broke the toy by accident, but he tried to play around with it anyway. To his surprise, even though the toy shouldn't work, it did anyway. Curious, he fumbled with his toys, and noticed that, with enough concentration, he could get them to work in many ways they weren't meant to do. He was ecstatic! He finally found magic that he could work on, and it was something he enjoyed doing!
He ran to his parents one day to show them his new-found skills. Unexpectedly to this child, the parents were mortified. Out of impulsive irrational fear, they scolded him and took his toys away. They warned him to never practice that kind of magic again. They haven't told him why. He was only ten. He wasn't ready to be explained what happens to those who practice Technomancy.
Enraged beyond belief, he slit his parents' throats in their sleep. He went to sleep, woke up, got his toys, and coldly played with them, as if nothing is wrong with what happened. When his older sister saw what happened, she ran away from home, but not without cursing her brother and wishing him the worst in life before death. He burned his mother's and father's corpses, threw away the ashes, and stayed at the house, where he has lived to this day.
As the years went by, he still carried resentment for his parents. On top of that he noticed that his skills did not get much better. Even after over 3 decades of practice, his skill is merely that of an amateur. Even worse he found out early on that he was unable to perform any other magic at all, let alone do them nearly as well as his Technomancy. He was forever enraged that his insecurity has acted like a curse. He grew a bitter man to this day.
