Name: Candelarias al-Shariq
Gender: Male
Age: 31 years old
Species: Human
Breed: N/A
Height: 6'10"
Ruling God: Pyrion, Lux, Celestion
Element(s): Fire, Light
Elemental Affinity: Fire: 3, Light: 7
Appearance: art: imgur.com/a/3EUMZPk
Candelarias is a towering man, standing at 6’10, with dark brown skin, eyes, and close-cropped hair. He maintains a clean-shaven look over his broad features. His body is well-muscled and toughened like a soldier’s. His palms are notably callused and burned, and scars dot along his extremities.
He usually wears a suit of blackened plate armor, fastened over a layer of yellowish padded cloth garments, which protects only up to his forearms and shins. Reinforced leather gloves and boots cover the rest. Brass trim, filigreed images of burning candles, and ages of wear and tear decorate the suit. An ironwork candelabra fixed to the back of his cuirass bears an array of candles well above his head, raining light, heat, and no small amount of melted wax over him.
Personality: Candelarias is warm and friendly, preferring to greet people with a bright smile. He enjoys small talk and humoring people’s interests for as long as he gets to accompany them. He’s also curious about the larger world and honest about his naivety. He is generally generous and selfless; charity is a way of life to him. He believes wholeheartedly in the philosophy of the light and flame, which espouses their virtues as a guide, a warmth, a comfort, and a weapon. In turn, he struggles to accept and understand new ideas and beliefs. His faith, after all, has already answered everything.
He is observant and measured in his approach to conflict, choosing his battles according to his goals. He is, however, uncompromising on his ability to defend himself and others, always bracing to fight if potential enemies do not immediately acquiesce to his demands. He believes in a doctrine of swift and extreme retribution as a deterrent.
Biography: Candelarias was born to the religious community of Dosdio, descended from poor fellow-knights who dedicated themselves to the care and safe passage of pilgrims to the gods’ holy sites. The base they raised on the wayside of a pilgrimage route was developed over generations into the village of Candelarias’ birth.
At a young age, he was advised by his village elders to train and live as an apprentice to a Waywarden on account of his budding physical gifts and his affinities for their venerated elements: the light and the flame. The Waywardens were respected, if not mysterious and strange, figures in their community who lived beyond their ancient walls but promised their people safety and security. He would live, train, and study according to the traditions of his knight ancestors; he would master their arts of war and care, way of life, and spiritual lore. The price, however, he would only feel in maturity: he would have to leave his family and people behind to dedicate his life to his new calling.
After decades of service to his Waywarden master and not a moment before his senior’s passing, Candelarias finally earned the right to be called Waywarden himself. He lives alone in a watchpost by the long pilgrim way, spending most days patrolling on muleback. He returns home on rare occasions to see family and run errands for the leadership, though he doesn’t stay long. Candelarias is proud to be Waywarden, but he’s not quite sure of who he is beyond that. Feeling estranged from his family and home due to long experience, he wishes for opportunities to connect with the outside and find some sense of identity, but he fears straying from the virtue of the light and flame in pursuit of his desires.
Equipment: Grand torch mace (a blackened two-handed metal flanged mace with a magical flame burning at its head), backpack, curved knife, bag of candles, tinder box, lamp oil, pocket prayer book, candlewax bead bracelet, almspurse, waterskin, bandages, herbal medicine set, trail mix, ancient map, charcoal stick
Occupation: Waywarden
Other: Candelarias worships his gods only as the masters of the elements he reveres. The virtues of the light and flame that constitute his faith are separate from whatever people the gods are like. He does not know who his gods really are, but wishes that they are good people.
He calls his gods by their names that ring in the village: Pirogo (Pyrion), Lusco (Lux), and Sol Aman (Celestion).
Has a habit of calling people, even strangers, 'brother' or 'sister'.
Can chant, does so with his prayers and songs while camping or on the road.
